  2. food-stuffs, mitochondria 
  3. release energy to the cell in the 
  4. form of ATP and thus make 
  5. possible all the life activities 
  6. of the cell that require energy.  
  7. Mitochondria have a double-
  8. layered membrane.  Whereas the 
  9. outer membrane of a 
  10. mitochondrion is smooth, the inner 
  11. membrane has many folds called
  12.  cristae.  The cristae are lined by 
  13. respiratory assemblies, 
  14. suborganelles containing the enzymes 
  15. that break down food-stuffs and
  16.  generate ATP.  In general, cells that
  17. have high energy needs have more 
  18. mitochondria, and, in turn, their 
  19. mitochondria have more cristae and 
  20. thus more respiratory assemblies.
